![]() The town began to rebuild and by the 1870s, it was a thriving community with several manufacturing businesses. Only two buildings survived, the Hamilton Hotel and the Hamilton Bank. The fire spread quickly through the wooden buildings in the downtown area. In 1866, the village was nearly destroyed by a fire that started in a livery stable. During the Civil War, Hamilton was a stop on the Underground Railroad. The village was named after Alexander Hamilton, the first U.S. The town was platted in 1855 and incorporated as a village in 1861. The first permanent settler in Hamilton was Charles McEwen, who arrived in 1843. The town is part of the Dutch-American Heritage Corridor and is the home of the Hamilton Russian Festival. As of the 2010 census, the town had a population of 1,139. It is located on the west side of the state, along Interstate 94, about midway between Chicago and Detroit.
